Kalypto/A-250 is the 12th entity encountered in Rooms & Doors. It attacks players from the ceiling who aren't hiding under a table, and also stops players hiding in a locker from exiting for several seconds.

Appearance[]

Kalypto appears to be a large, fleshy hand containing a mouth in the middle with five teeth top and bottom, on both rows the middle tooth is the largest.

Mechanics[]

When Kalypto spawns, the ceiling will begin to quickly crack and rumble, emitting particles, letting players know that it will attack soon. Players must be in a place that Kalypto cannot reach; most commonly under a table, but also downstairs in a room featuring stairs. If Kalypto manages to attack a player, it will freeze them in place and bite them, dealing 45 damage then retreating back into the ceiling and allowing the player to move again. If Kalypto is unable to reach the player, it will wave around two times before going back into the ceiling. Alternatively, the player can open the door to the next room and run inside to prevent Kalypto's attack, as it cannot attack in newly generated rooms. Kalypto will wait before attacking if an entity that requires the player to hide in a locker spawns.

If someone hides in a locker instead, Kalypto will block the locker door, which prevents the player from leaving and giving The Darkness a chance to hurt or even kill the player. After ~8 seconds Kalypto will stop blocking the door. Attempting to open the door while its blocked plays a bang sound effect and gives the message "Something is Blocking the Door."

How to Avoid[]

If you see the ceiling start to crack and rumble, immediately look for a table that you're able to hide under. Note that tables are not guaranteed to spawn when Kalypto is about to attack, not to mention if there is a table, there is a chance that you will not be able to hide under it. (Only in a single room type, only A-350+). Also note that Kalypto can hit you while waving its hand, so don't leave the table until it goes away.

Kalypto will always wait before attacking if you're currently being attacked by any entities that require you to hide in a locker and/or being attacked by A-90 and it's prime variant. If you hear A-60 or notice Insidæ or Happy Scribble trying to attack, be sure to deal with them before hiding under a table, as they will get to you before Kalypto has a chance to attack.

It is recommended that you don't hide in a locker if Kalypto is about to attack. If you hide in one, it'll keep you in there for several seconds, allowing The Darkness to attack and potentially kill you. If you have the regular flashlight, you can use it to temporarily stop it from damaging you while you're trapped. With proper timing when entering the locker, you can completely survive without taking any damage from The Darkness. You should only hide in lockers in case you cannot hide under a table in time.

From A-900 onward, avoid hiding in a locker against Kalypto at all costs if you are at least 4-5 rooms behind. The extra time spent in the locker will leave no room for advancing if A-60 and its prime variant attack immediately afterward, as the grace period begins the moment Kalypto emerges from the ceiling. This could very well result in an otherwise unavoidable death to The Void. If there are no tables around and you are mostly healthy, consider sacrificing some health to catch back up.

If you have the Patience Charm equipped, performing a catalyst locker timing will chop Kalypto's fingers off, which will force it to retreat; the severed fingers can be observed on the floor afterwards. Catalyst timings for A-250 can also be performed for tables, granting similar catalyst rewards, but will not cause any damage to Kalypto.

Spawn Rules[]

  1. For every attack that does not result in an immediate one, use a random number generator to determine if it should be a warning (no attack at all) or an actual attack. This correlates with Rule 2.
  2. If Kalypto is about to attack, wait until every single major entity has stopped attacking, namely A-60, A-60', A-90, A-90', A-120, A-200 and A-200'. If there isn't any, attack immediately (This means that Kalypto will always be the last entity to attack the player in a chain of events). If this is the case, generate quiet rumbling and particles coming from the ceiling, then return back to normal volume when it's time to attack the player.
  3. If the main room becomes a checkpoint room or is A-1000, do not spawn or stop attacking at all.
  4. Spawn if the room number becomes A-250, while respecting Rule 2, and do warning attacks for the previous 2 rooms.
  5. If a main entity spawns while Kalypto is about to attack, stop the rumbling, lower the rumbling of it's sound and wait to attack until the main entity/s have despawned.

Trivia[]

  • Since Kalypto attacks from the ceiling, it is physically unable to attack players who are hiding under a table or on the bottom floor of the staircase room.
  • There was a bug where hiding in a locker as Kalypto is damaging you, the game bugs and you are immune to Pnevma but you can't hide or interact with anything. In this bugged state, you are also vulnerable to every other entity. This was patched in the table rework update.
  • Kalypto means "Cover" in Greek.
  • Kalypto traps anybody hiding in a locker for several seconds, leaving them vulnerable to The Darkness to attack and potentially kill them. This is mostly an issue when attempting to get the Patience Charm.
  • Kalypto is a right hand.
    • This could canonically mean that Kalypto is a real person.
      • It could also mean that the hypothetical person is right-handed.
  • Kalypto's death screen returned with the recording being in room "000000000"
    • This is due to it being recorded in the test place for the game.
  • There is a bug where Kalypto will also attack ghosts. This, however, does not affect the ghost.
  • If the bell in the power-switch room (which appears before A-20) is rung enough times, Kalypto will be spawned, killing the player that rang the bell as punishment for their heinous crime.
    • This is a reference to Lethal Company.
    • The Wilhelm Scream is heard when a player dies to Kalypto.
      • This can be seen in action here.
  • Kalypto was modeled in blender.
  • Kalypto starts attacking faster after room 350 with the attack delay dropping from ~4 seconds to ~2.5 seconds.
  • Kalypto was added into the game along with Paralysis and Pnevma on June 16th, 2023.
  • It is possible for Kalypto to attack in a safe room if delayed by a spawn by A-60.
  • There is a bug where Kalypto warns but doesn't attack.
  • Additionally, Kalypto may randomly begin its attack sequence randomly, excluding the warning phase. This usually occurs when an entity doesn't attack, and if there isn't a table (or locker if using Patience) nearby, it forces you to take damage. This bug is much easier to deal with before A-400, due to increased time to deal with it.
